WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
There are three things we need to sell ourselves in life and reach the peak of success. These are: COMPETENCE, LIKEABILITY and LUCK. While competence and likeability will almost always deliver “luck” to us, one potent instrument that is very critical to our ability to advertise our competence and become likeable and “lucky” is the POWER OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION, especially excellent public speaking and presentation skills. This is why an average but articulate and confident candidate often outshines brilliant but inarticulate candidates at an oral job interview.
It has been established that every human being has potential for leadership. But in spite of this latent ability, it is only few people that discover and utilise their leadership talent. It takes time to become a leader. John Maxwell, a renowned leadership expert educates that while a few people are born leaders, the ability to lead is actually a collection of skills, nearly all of which can be learnt and sharpened. So leaders have the responsibility to update their leadership skills always to avoid premature arrival of the menopause of their leadership capabilities.
BIBLICAL ALLUSIONS
MOSES AND JEREMIAH: As regards communication, respective responses of Moses and Jeremiah to God’s call underscore the importance of eloquence to one’s level of success in the ministry. WHEN GOD CALLED MOSES, HE REPLIED IN EXODUS 4:10 thus: “I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am of slow speech, and of a slow tongue” (KJV). JEREMIAH EQUALLY RESPONDED IN THE SAME MANNER WHEN GOD CALLED HIM, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child” (Jeremiah 1:6. KJV).
APOLLOS AND JESUS CHRIST: However, one thing that enhanced Apollos’ ministry was the power of effective language and communication. This is because he did a course in Rhetoric, that is, the art of effective or persuasive speaking, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. Little wonder that Acts 18: 24 says, “And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.”
In a related development, Luke 4: 22 discloses concerning Jesus Christ, “And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’” (KJV).
MOSES AND JESUS: On leadership, Moses could not reach Canaan, the Promised Land despite all his labour was his lack of leadership ingredient of emotional intelligence (Numbers 20: 11-12). However, despite extreme provocation, Jesus Christ was able to accomplish His major task of our salvation on earth through exceptional emotional intelligence and leadership/human management skills.
